Akeena Solar (NASDAQ : WEST) is a solar power installer and manufacturer of solar power systems serving residential, commercial and retail customers across California. The company’s patented solar panel technology, Andalay, reduces labor by 50% and parts by 80% relative to ordinary solar panels, while improving aesthetics, safety and performance. Akeena Solar is expanding its AC solar panel line of business by setting up distribution throughout the U.S. and Europe to solar installers, building supply retailers, and new home builders.
According to SolarBuzz, a research and consulting firm, the global solar power market had an estimated $10 billion in revenue in 2005 and is expected to grow to $19 billion by 2010. The residential and small commercial market segments represent approximately 65 percent of the U.S. market, and will continue to do so through 2010. Since its founding in 2001, Akeena has concentrated on serving the solar power needs of this market.
